California Campgrounds

The third largest state, California, has some of the most diverse campgrounds, no matter what type of camping you looking for. With over 600 Campgrounds, Recreation Areas, and State Beaches, it is no wonder that California Camping is one of the more popular activities in the state.

The California State Park system, National Parks and National Forest System, make up the majority of the campgrounds throughout the state. California Campers often have multiple camping set ups depending on the time of year and environment. Its not uncommon to see groups and individual taking advantage of the states campgrounds year round. In Southern California, campers will roll out to the desert campgrounds near Joshua Tree National Park and Anza Borrego to see the desert flowers in bloom. During the summer forested campgrounds like those of the Sierra Nevada, Idyllwild and Big Bear, become frequently visited. California Beach Camping along the coast is available year round, with the temperatures infrequently dropping below 50ºF, during the Summer, Spring and Fall.

California is also home to several popular National Park camping destination. Joshua Tree in the desert of Southern California, provides a unique, untouched view of the California Desert. While Yosemite National Park and Redwood National parks in the north can dwarf you with the size of their 1000 year old trees.

There is one consistent to California Camping. Reservations are a must. With so many campers and no real offseason, the good campgrounds go early, and good walk up site can be difficult to find.
